La Vallee
Project Date: 2010-2011Weaving baskets from local fibers is not only the most widely practiced craft in Haiti but also the one most directly linked to local consumption. Baskets for the international market were big business in Haiti until competition from Asia, combined with political upheaval and natural disasters, brought exports to a near halt in the past few years. La Vallee's artisans began exporting baskets in the 1980's and with the help of ATA these artisans have been linked to new buyers whose orders increase yearly. With this resurgence in orders, weaving skills are now flourishing and traditional designs have been re-interpreted creating a renewed interest from international buyers.
