Kala Raksha

The Kala Raksha project (kala raksha means "art preservation") began in Kutch, India in 1991 under the leadership of American textile scholar, Judy Frater. It included two interlinked parts: preservation of age-old traditions and income generation via contemporary work. In 1993, Kala Raksha was registered as a society and trust and has established a center which contains a computerized office, workshop, resource center and museum all electrified with photovoltaic solar power. The Center serves as a model of contemporary technology for village artisans.

Kala Raksha exhibits periodically outside India, at the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington and in 2006 the Kala Raksha Trust was a special honoree of Eileen Fisher's clothing company. Judy Frater has been selected for her innovative work as an Ashoka Fellow. Her book, "Threads of Identity", is a classic.
