Jacmel
Project Date: 2010-2011The town of Jacmel is known for its annual Mardi Gras celebration as well as its long-standing tradition of papier mâché production. Like so many creative traditions, papier mâché evolved through its role in religious ceremonies; in this case Mardi Gras. The world-renowned Mardi Gras masks created through this medium are colorful and original works of art. Prior to the 2010 earthquake, dozens of papier mâché workshops lined the streets of this historic city and through design development with ATA; artisans are once again active in their craft, this time creating whimsical decorative objects and ornaments for a larger retail market.
